Meet one of our Offbeaters, Lorena. She splits her time between London and Mexico City, with plenty of travel in-between. She finds inspiration in the everyday, and yes, her rescue cat is moving from Mexico City to London. He’ll be doing his fair share of toing and froing, though we’re not sure he realises the upgrade he’s had with his impending jetset lifestyle.

Lorena thinks Offbeat Horizons should run a trip where you bring your cat along. Thoughts?
Some trips are about switching off. Ours are about Some trips are about switching off. Ours are about switching on.

Beneath the Feathered Serpent Pyramid above, archaeologists discovered the remains of more than 100 individuals who were sacrificed, often including men, women and children. These sacrifices were part of important religious and ceremonial rituals, likely meant to honour the gods and ensure the city’s prosperity.

Thankfully, those types of sacrifices are no longer the norm.

In the hills of Hidalgo, Mexico, a former miner’ In the hills of Hidalgo, Mexico, a former miner’s village still carries the legacy of Cornish workers who came in search of silver. Their influence lingers in the cobbled streets, English-style houses and in the ‘paste’, a Mexican twist on the Cornish pasty that is now a local favourite. The locals get quite excited when they meet visitors from the UK, a warm reminder of how two very different worlds became connected and created a surreal setting.
“I walked into a cafe in Buenos Aires around 2pm “I walked into a cafe in Buenos Aires around 2pm, expecting a quirky coffee spot. Instead, I found myself in a dimly lit room, hidden behind tinted windows, where professionals sipped coffee served by women in revealing outfits. It was quite different from London’s grab-and-go coffee culture, where the focus is on efficiency and high-quality brews.”

Café con Piernas, which originated in Chile in the 1940s, made its way to Buenos Aires by the 1980s. What started as a twist on traditional coffee service soon became popular amongst professionals who would stop by during their workday. Inspired by iconic spots like Café Havana in Chile, this tradition became a embedded in the local cafe scene, attracting both locals and curious tourists. While some view these cafes as outdated and objectifying, others see them as a source of stable income for those with limited job options.

At Offbeat Horizons, we believe travel is about discovering these stories. It’s not just about the landmarks - it’s about the people, the cultures and the experiences that broaden our horizons.

Let’s talk about marigolds. Native to Mexico, ma Let’s talk about marigolds. Native to Mexico, marigolds made their way to India with Portuguese traders in the 16th century. Today they are woven into both cultures, guiding spirits during Dia de los Muertos and symbolising devotion, prosperity and celebration in Indian festivals like Diwali. A flower that crossed oceans yet became deeply rooted in two distinct traditions.

A vibrant symbol of how nature and culture can bridge continents.

At 18, stepping into a room full of industry profe At 18, stepping into a room full of industry professionals and sharing her first portfolio takes confidence. That’s exactly what Daniella, an aspiring travel journalist, did at the Destinations Show this month.

She attended insightful talks and began building her network. It’s exactly the kind of initiative we admire at Offbeat Horizons, where we believe in supporting personal growth by helping individuals develop their skills and confidence.

Daniella will be joining us for a summer internship, and we hope the industry experts she met will continue to support her as she develops her career.

Thank you to @timestravel @jrnymag @wanderlustmag @watertogo @foodandtravelmag for being so open and welcoming.

Looking forward to seeing what’s ahead of her!

Medellin has moved on, so why hasn’t the world? Medellin has moved on, so why hasn’t the world? While some still buy into narco tourism, Colombia is considering a nationwide ban on Escobar souvenirs to curb the glorification of a violent past.

Medellin today is about innovation, resilience and reinvention. Think flower festivals, cable cars over the Andes, world-class coffee and a warmth that goes beyond the weather.

Whilst finalising the plan for our Colombia Transformed trip, we asked our local guide whether we should start the trip in Medellin (we may have known the answer already). His answer was a resounding yes, so we listened. Medellin’s story, from its troubled past to its remarkable transformation, sets the perfect tone for this trip. This isn’t about tired stereotypes. It’s about seeing the real Colombia.

It is time to shift the narrative.

Meet the lovely Laura Peña. In the heart of Suchi Meet the lovely Laura Peña. In the heart of Suchitoto, El Salvador, she has dedicated almost eight decades to the meticulous craft of hand-rolling cigars. Despite her lifelong commitment to this fading tradition, Laura herself has never smoked. She offers her handcrafted cigars in packs of 25 for $5 USD, striving to preserve a practice that has nearly vanished due to declining profitability and interest. Laura stands as the last cigar roller in Suchitoto, embodying a rich cultural heritage that persists against the odds.

It was an absolute pleasure to share some laughs with her. We hope she’s doing well.
